Emergency Preparedness for Pets

Your pets cannot pack their own bags. If you have to evacuate or shelter in place, a pet survival kit makes sure your animals have food, water, containment and comfort supplies ready to go. Most emergency shelters do not accept pets, which makes having your own supplies even more important.

What should a pet emergency kit include?

• Food and water — at least a 3-day supply
• Collapsible food and water bowls
• Leash, collar and current ID tags
• Waste bags and sanitation supplies
• Any medications your pet takes regularly
• Comfort items — a familiar toy or blanket
• Copy of vaccination records and a recent photo

Do I need separate kits for different pets?

Ideally, yes. Dogs and cats have different food, containment and comfort needs. If you have multiple animals, label each kit clearly so you can grab the right one quickly.
