Emergency Kits for Kids

Giving kids their own emergency kit does two things — it makes sure they have age-appropriate supplies sized for them, and it gives them a sense of control during a scary situation. Children who are involved in emergency planning tend to handle real events with less anxiety.

What is in a children's survival kit?

Child-sized emergency blanket
Light sticks and a whistle
Water and kid-friendly snacks
Basic first aid supplies
Comfort items — a small toy, coloring pages, crayons
Emergency contact card with family phone numbers

What age should kids have their own emergency kit?

Kids as young as 4 or 5 can carry a small kit with comfort items and a whistle. By age 8-10, most children can manage a light backpack with water, snacks and basic supplies. Teens can carry a kit similar to an adult bug out bag scaled to their size.
