Survival Kits for Real-World Emergencies

A survival kit puts essential supplies in one place so you can respond quickly when things go sideways — power outages, severe weather, evacuations, or any scenario where normal routines break down. Instead of scrambling to gather supplies under pressure, you grab a kit and go.

What is a survival kit?

A survival kit is a pre-assembled collection of supplies designed to sustain one or more people through an emergency. Most kits include water, food, lighting, first aid, warmth and communication tools. The contents vary depending on the scenario the kit is built for — a vehicle breakdown kit looks different from a 72-hour evacuation bag or a home blackout kit.

Types of survival kits

• Bug Out Bags — portable 72-hour evacuation packs
• Auto Survival Kits — vehicle breakdowns and roadside emergencies
• Blackout Survival Kits — home power outage essentials
• Bucket Survival Kits — long-term sealed storage
• Children's Survival Kits — age-appropriate gear for kids
• Pet Survival Kits — emergency supplies for animals
• Preparedness Packages — comprehensive multi-person bundles

How do you choose the right survival kit?

Start with the emergency scenario you are most likely to face. If you live in a storm-prone area, a home blackout kit is a practical first step. If you commute long distances, a vehicle kit makes sense. For general readiness, a bug out bag covering 72 hours is the most common starting point. Build your baseline first, then expand from there.

What should every survival kit include?

At minimum, a solid kit covers six fundamentals: water, food, light, first aid, warmth and communication. Everything else — tools, documents, hygiene, entertainment — builds on that foundation.
