Long Term Emergency Food

Long-term food storage is the backbone of serious preparedness planning. These meals are specifically processed and packaged to remain safe and nutritious for 10 to 25+ years — the kind of shelf life that means you can buy once and not worry about it for a very long time.

What types of food have the longest shelf life?

• Freeze-dried meals — 25+ year shelf life, lightweight, just add water
• Dehydrated foods — 10-15 year shelf life, compact storage
• Canned and retort-pouched meals — 5-10 year shelf life, ready to eat

How many calories should you plan per person per day?

Plan for approximately 2,000 calories per adult per day as a baseline. Active adults, children, nursing mothers and people in cold environments may need more. Most emergency food packaging lists the total calorie count and number of servings — do the math before you buy.
