Emergency Lighting & Communication

These two categories go hand in hand because in most emergencies, the first thing you need is light to see, and the second thing you need is information about what is happening. A good flashlight and a reliable radio solve both problems.

What lighting should you have for emergencies?

• LED flashlight — at least 200 lumens, with extra batteries
• Headlamp — hands-free light for tasks and movement
• Lantern — area lighting for rooms and campsites
• Glow sticks — safe ambient light, good for kids

What type of emergency radio should you buy?

Look for a radio that receives NOAA weather alerts, AM/FM broadcasts, and has multiple power sources — hand-crank, solar and batteries. Many emergency radios also include a USB charging port for phones and a built-in flashlight.
