United States: Over two dozen demonstrators were apprehended following a forceful occupation of an academic edifice at the University of Washington. The occupation was spearheaded by an activist assembly known as Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return (SUPER UW), which urged the institution to dissolve all affiliations with aerospace titan Boeing amidst the continuing hostilities in Gaza.
The coalition’s representative, Oliver Marchant, relayed via text to ABC News that every participant within the premises had been detained. “They were all arrested, and ongoing legal and political scaffolding is being mobilized for their defense,” Marchant said. “With the exception of one, all were inside the structure; some endured injuries during the detention process and are in need of medical intervention,” according to ABC News.
Victor Balta, assistant vice president for communications at UW, affirmed that nearly 30 individuals faced charges such as unlawful entry, property vandalism, and disorderly behavior. He also noted that some were accused of conspiring to commit these infractions. All incidents will be submitted to the King County Prosecutor’s Office for further examination.
Balta emphasized that any identified students will concurrently face disciplinary scrutiny through the Student Conduct Office.
Prior dispatches from the university disclosed that a crowd—estimated at several dozen—breached the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building shortly before its closure at 5 pm. Law enforcement attached to the campus was summoned immediately thereafter.
Law officers, in coordination with auxiliary enforcement bodies, began dispersal procedures outside the structure around 10:30 pm. According to Balta, the protesters attempted to obstruct entries and ignited two refuse bins in the street as part of their resistance. By 11 pm, authorities had breached the interior and commenced evacuations, as reported by ABC News.
Before detentions began, university statements described the occupiers as largely masked, having barricaded access points using furnishings.
“To our current understanding, any UW affiliates not inclined to remain have vacated the premises,” the university stated, adding, “The individuals persisting within are now deemed intruders and will incur both judicial and institutional ramifications.”
SUPER UW publicized a list of demands targeting the university’s alliance with Boeing. Chief among them: extricating the company from the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building (IEB) and rechristening the facility altogether.
Boeing, a major player in the aviation and defense sectors, has a longstanding relationship with UW. In 2022, the university acknowledged that Boeing contributed roughly \$10 million to the construction of the \$90 million IEB. At that time, a university communiqué underscored that Boeing’s affiliation with UW spans over a century.
The activist group called for a full revocation of Boeing’s financial and institutional presence at the university. “Repel any existing contributions, divest from financial entanglements, and obliterate all substantive connections to Boeing,” the group demanded. “Forbid Boeing personnel from instructing courses or exerting any curricular influence,” according to ABC News.
In a firm rejoinder, Balta reiterated the university’s dedication to upholding a safe academic environment. “We vehemently repudiate this unlawful occupation,” he asserted, also denouncing what he described as incendiary rhetoric issued in the protesters’ press brief. “The university will not be browbeaten by such incendiary and damaging theatrics,” he declared.
